BY: Matt Porter, The Palm Beach Post — PALM BEACH GARDENS — No. 1 Dwyer and No. 4 Palm Beach Central have played each other twice this season. It’s a good bet they’ll meet again in the District 9-8A girls basketball tournament final.

“I’m expecting that,” Dwyer coach Jeryl Akins said. “We’ll be the one [seed], they’ll be the two. But Lexus will be back.”

Akins was referring to Palm Beach Central 6-foot-1 senior Lexus Love, who watched Wednesday night’s game from the stands. Love, who is expected to miss two weeks with a toe injury, left Central with a size deficit it couldn’t overcome.

Dwyer (20-3, 8-0) grabbed a 60-50 win and the district’s No. 1 seed, thanks to talented sophomore Keyanna Harris, whose triple-double included 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

To start the fourth quarter, the 5-11 wing drained a pair of 3s with a hand in her face, then knocked down a jumper to put Dwyer up 12. She put home the game’s final points after a crossover in traffic and a drive to the basket that would raise Tim Hardaway’s eyebrows.

“She can do that,” Akins said. “We rely on our big people, but she’s proving she’s another weapon.”

Dwyer’s posts also came to play. Junior Samantha Glodis scored a game-high 20 with 12 rebounds. Junior Kai James added 17 and 13.

The Broncos (13-4, 6-2) hung with Dwyer, thanks mainly to 6-1 senior post Mariah-Caurhyn Smelser (19 points, 7 rebounds) and 5-11 freshman wing Crystal Primm, who put up 12 points and five assists while defending James (6-5) and Glodis (6-3).

“I’m proud of my girls, no doubt about that,” Palm Beach Central coach Bruce Gaffney said.

Playing a focused road game, Central led at the outset by filling passing lanes and hitting open shots. But Dwyer grabbed a four-point lead at the half and kept it up for most of the stretch run.

“We started off kind of slow,” said Akins, who added that early nerves played a role. His team hadn’t played a home game since before Christmas. “Once we got settled, we were OK.”

The Miami Suns basketball program is well represented in the 2015 class. Crystal Primm, a 5’10 Guard out of Palm Beach Central and Beatrice Mompremier, a 6’5 Center from Miami High have been featured on flavarsitycom’s Class of 2015 Fantastic Frosh. Below you can read both Primm’s and Mompremier’s synopsis.

Crystal Primm 5-10 G Palm Beach Central (Palm Beach) – Long athletic wing player had a huge summer playing for both the Miami Suns Fowles and Team Larkins. A rare coupling of skill and athletic ability put Primm as the likely #1 wing prospect in the class as the current time. Primm is already receiving mail from Major Division I programs and one would doubt that she would expect anything different in the future. As Primm gains strength and becomes more aggressive she is going to become very hard to stop at any level.

Beatrice Mompremier 6-5 C Miami Senior (Miami) – It is hard to find 6-5 post players let alone just as a freshman. Mompremier can run with anyone and is a superb athlete. Mompremier is still a work in progress offensively with her skills but changes the game on defense and with the coaching at Miami High she will be destined for success. With her college ready athletic ability and frame there is just no way if you are a college program you can avoid recruiting the 6-5 post from Miami.

The October weekend has passed us and this free-be by the Girl’s Basketball Insider will tell you some of the top players in Florida currently and for the future. Because the state of Florida gets little to no media attention as this event did working together with great programs like the Miami Suns, South Florida Jags, Hollywood Eagles, FGB, Florida Angels, Suncoast Basketball Club among others show why Florida recruiting is imprinted on the national scene every game you watch. Great work by the staff down in South Florida putting on the best event of the fall evaluation period. Although it rained all weekend (literally) the gym was more then hot even when the lights got put out by lightening play inside didnt sway. Even other event operators from around the state paid to see what was the best day of exposure in Florida in 2011 year. With such a high profile crowd (Sylvia Fowles among them) the talent in Florida didnt dissapoint.

No one did more to put herself on the map more than Briahanna Jackson this weekend
Class of 2012 MVP: Briahanna Jackson 5-7 G IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fl)- Jackson walked on to campus at St Thomas University with only taken one visit to East Tennessee State, by Monday morning schools from 4 of the 6 BCS conferences nationally were inquiring about the big time scoring guard from Tampa. Jackson put on a show against 2013 sensation Raigyne Moncrief of American Heritage as well as just being a 30 point a game kid all weekend. After playing in exposure tournaments all summer one would wonder how so many services and coaches missed the boat on this big time player. Luckily she made the trek down to Miami this weekend, its no longer a problem.

2012 Top 10 (No Order): Cedrika Sweeting (Hollywood Eagles); Symone Bullard (Miami Suns); Monique Maximillien (Miami Suns); Mariah Smelser (Miami Suns); Bre Crum (Tampa Nuggets); Jakelle Gilchrest (New Jersey Sparks); Robin Perkins (New Jersey Sparks); Shayla Wilson (Suncoast BBall Club); Jessica Logemann (Suncoast Bball Club); Khadejra Young (South Florida Jags)

After being injured all summer Raygine Moncrief showed why she belongs among the nation’s elite
Class of 2013 MVP: Raigyne Moncrief 5-10 G American Heritage (Plantation, Fl) (Miami Suns) – Moncrief after being injured at Duke Camp this summer chose to take the summer off from the exposure circuit and get healthy. Well this weekend she came back on the scene and she looked pretty healthy. Moncrief gets to the rim at will and changes the game with her defense on just about any position on the floor. An improved jump shot with great elevation shows an emerging offensive game which could carry her to the top of the recruiting world. After being snubbed this summer in the class of 2013, she proved this weekend she’s among the nation’s elite.

Kai James is without a doubt the top post prospect in 2013 in the south
2013 Top 10 (No Order):Kai James (Miami Suns); Brittany Brown (Miami Suns); Victoria Carroll (FGB); Ashley Perry (FGB); Heather Freeman (FGB); Alexis Ungro (Angles); Nia Roberts (Miami Suns); Tatianna Manuel (Florida Nuggets); Teana Muldrow (New Jersey Sparks); Africa Williams (New Jersey Sparks)

Dominique Simpson and FGB made some noise on the recruiting front this weekend
Class of 2014 MVP: Dominique Simpson 5-9 G Orlando Jones (Orlando, Fl)(FGB) – Little Diamond Deshields was the buzz around coaches at the Miami Suns Team Jam, speaking with coaches they couldnt name many better 2014 prospects in Florida than Dominique Simpson. An emerging star on the scene has a great mix of athletic talent and skill which you can tell has increased her confidence and is taking her to the highest level. No doubt this 2014 prospect is a potential All American when her time comes.

2014 Top 11 (No Order):Sha’Quoia Crockett (FGB); Christina Potts (FGB); Aisha Edwards (Miami Suns); Keyanna Harris (Miami Suns); Kenyia Johnson (FGB); Taylor Thigpen (Angels); Shakoa Edwards (Miami Suns); Danneal Ford (Miami Suns); Myisha Hines (New Jersey Sparks); Imani Tiford (New Jersey sparks); Trellanie English (South Florida Jags)

Not the first time we have written about 2015 Crystal Primm, and certainly wont be the last
Class of 2015 MVP: Crystal Primm 6-0 G Palm Beach Central (West Palm Beach, FL) (Miami Suns) – Primm the youngest player invited to this year’s Next Level 24 Game in Orlando showed that she will not just be a good young kid but a player to be wreckoned with now and in the future for sure. Long and athletic Primm stands 6-0 tall on the wing already as a freshman. Primms ability to score going to the rim and hit outside shots make her an elite prospect in the class of 2015 and one to keep an eye on for sure.

Jonell Williams, Palatka Native in 2015 is currently the #1 Freshman in Florida
2015 Top 5 (No Order):McKenna Beach (Vision); Jonell Williams (FGB); Leanna Ellis (Vision); Emily Lines (Vision); Lindsay Stramel (Vision)

Miami Suns Team Jam Class of 2016 & Younger

2017 Jalaysha Thomas could be the next Sylvia Fowles? Certainly the best prospect in the 2017 class
Class of 2016 & Younger MVP: Jalaysha Thomas 6-2 F (Citra, Fl) (FGB) – We wrote about Thomas last fall and guess what, everytime I see her she gets taller. Without a doubt one of the top prospects overall in the event still is in middle school with two years before she hits the high school scene. One college coach told me they thought that Thomas was one of the elite freshman in Florida, one problem…she’s in 7th grade. A member of the All Star team this weekend, Thomas got to meet Sylvia Fowles, a surreal moment where the present met the future? We will see.

Class of 2016 & Younger Top 2: Cabria Lee (Miami Suns); Jasmine Gee (New Jersey Sparks)

Suns C Chucky Vazquez (2012, American HS, Miami, FL) is a high-level catching prospect with strength and a power bat along with very good catch and throw skills. Edison Cabrera (2014, American HS, Miami, FL) is a young prospect to watch and showed soft, sure hands on the infield and good pop from gap to gap.

Game 3: Miami Suns Gold vs FTB Mizuno (T 3-3)

The upset minded Miami Suns Gold nearly stole possession of first place in pool F away from the #1 ranked 17u organization in the nation, FTB Mizuno. They saw their 3-2 lead evaporate on a passed ball that only trickled a few feet but thanks to a great jump Sean Brady was able to score the tying run in the bottom of the 6th.

FTB Mizuno 17U and Miami Suns Gold played to a 3-3 tie on Sunday at Boston Red Sox Player Development five-Plex, Field four.

Miami Suns Gold jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Miami Suns Gold‘s threat began with a single by Edison Cabrera. A single by Chucky Vazquez then moved Cabrera from second to third. Then scored Cabrera.

The Suns, a highly talented team in their own right gave FTB all it could handle, with 5′ 9″ right gander Alex Perez (2013 Monsingor Pace HS, Miami, FL) terrorizing a lineup filled with highly ranked hitters with a sharp 12-6 curveball. Perez sat 84-88 with his fastball, dominating for 3 innings before finally yielding 2 runs on a hard line drive off the bat of C Thomas Nido (2012 Orangewood Christian HS, Oviedo, FL). FTB had chances late but stranded a runner on 3rd in the 5th, 6th and 7th innings. FTB used an impressive trio of arms to slow down a quality Suns lineup. LHP Ian McKinney (2013 Boone HS, Orlando, FL) hit 88, RHP Brad Labozetta (2012 Lakeland HS, FL) was up to 86 with plus command and LHP Alex Hagner (2013 Eustis HS, FL) topped at 88, showing a lot of potential.

Suns C/1B Luis Corales (2013 Miami Springs HS, Miami Springs, FL) and INF Gabriel Gali (2013 Westland HS, Hialeah, FL) both displayed superb defense through the weekend. C Chucky Vazquez continued his great weekend behind the plate and also added an RBI.
